POLEYESTEWA - HOPI KACHINAS

Of Hopi, Navajo and Spanish background, Poleyestewa grew up in Arizona and learned to carve kachinas from his Hopi Father.  "He told me that the Hopi kachinas were made for the young girls to carry around and become familiar with the features and traditions and not to put bases on them.  He also taught me to put strings on them so that they could be hung from the ceiling to watch over us."  He has been carving these traditional kachinas for over forty years and sells and delivers all of his own work.  They are carved from the cottonwood root and much of the decorating is done with minerals that he gathers, although some commercial pigments are used to assure consistancy.
