I
have been living
in New Mexico
since the early 60's. After early art foundation training
at
the Kansas City Art Institute, I found myself drawn to the mountains of
Colorado and New Mexico. In 1968 I helped open the Old Corrales
Art
Workshop northwest of Albuquerque. This was a rapid learning experience
that, within a year, lead me into teaching and production. My primary
focus
has been on the production of pottery made from local New Mexico red
clays,
incoporating glazing techniques that result in a depth of surface not
often
found in earthenware. Although the potters wheel was my first
love,
I have recently found more variety of expression through slab
construction,
incorporating press mold decorations. Occasionally a sculpted
figure
asks to be given form and these also will be presented here when it
happens. -MJD
